AI Ethics and “as if Perspectives”

My current research centres around the question what kind of people should we become and what doing ethics means in the age of AI. The worries are moral deskilling, the automation of judgment, and egocentrism associated with interacting with validating entities. The hopes are an augmentation of learning, especially for underprivileged students, the simulation of diverse perspectives and outcomes in a complex world.

I am particularly interested in analysing artificial intelligence systems in terms of “as-if perspectives”: systems that simulate first-person viewpoints without underlying subjectivity (e.g. agents such as “Ask Amina,” which model the perspective of a refugee). While often discussed under simulation or anthropomorphism, these systems introduce a distinct category: perspective without subjectivity, which raises new ethical and representational challenges.
